Baby Steps Quilt with Melody -

Hi everyone and thanks for stopping by! This is Luci from Sea Garden Sewing here. While it’s easing into autumn here in the Pacific Northwest, the new collection Melody by Beverly McCollough is giving me springtime vibes! The florals, birds, and butterflies all come together for a beautiful collection full of movement.

I used seven fat quarters and made my own version of the Baby Steps Quilt by Wren Collective. This is a free pattern and one that came together pretty quickly. With so many open seams, I’d recommend using a tailor’s clapper if you have one on hand.

I love making quilt tops, but can get overwhelmed by quilting on my domestic machine. In an attempt to grow my quilting skills, I got a copy of Jacquie Gering‘s book Walk: Master Machine Quilting With Your Walking Foot and have tried my hand at some new quilting designs. This is a simple chevron with lines spaced 4″ apart vertically.

I’m a vocal proponent of the #PutAStripeyBindingOnIt movement on Instagram and will almost always take the opportunity to use some striped binding!

I wanted to try something new with this quilt, so I rounded the edges for a different look.

Another one of my favorite Instagram hashtags is #PartyInTheQuiltBack. For the backing, I combined some more of my Melody fabric with some leftover Barn Dance in Jade fabric from Lori Holt‘s Bee Plaids.
