Triangular Frill Tote with Little Witch

It’s Sara Brown from @SaraBQuilts! While it may be a little early to be saying “trick or treat” right now, I definitely have a treat for you! Jennifer Long has created the cutest new Halloween fabric line called Little Witch. The colors are rich, saturated jewel tones that are a fun break from the typical orange and black Halloween tradition. I found myself drawn to the Little Witch fabric collection more than many of the other seasonal offerings! 

My personal favorite prints from the Little Witch collection are Magenta Main, Jade Pumpkin Patch, and Light Teal Potions. With multiple colors and shades of each, the Little Witch collection lends itself to busy patchwork patterns because there is so much variety!

My oldest child just started Kindergarten this past year. As a room parent, I spend a lot of time at holiday and seasonal functions helping out in the classroom. The kids love when I show up with a quilted bag or an outfit that matches the theme of the day. The moment I saw the beautiful colors, I knew that I needed a tote bag to take with me to school next spooky season! 

I chose the Triangular Frill Tote by TYTKA Studio. The pattern can be found here. Now, I know there are a lot of tote patterns out there, but this one is unique, fun, and absolutely adorable! I have never constructed a bag in this way before, but was so pleased with the new method that I learned. I did modify the pattern to include a full lining and used leather straps instead of fabric handles, but those modifications did not alter the style of the bag. 

First up there are two sweet ruffles that line the edges of the triangular tote. I hand stitched a thick basting stitch using Perle cotton that I had on hand and then scrunched the fabric strips up as the instructions explained to do. I used Purple Spider Dots as my ruffle fabric and the lining fabric. It is a deep, rich plum color that I cannot get enough of! 

Next, I made a patchwork panel using various fabrics from the collection. I love the little mushrooms, potion bottles, and cats peeking out from the squares! 

Finally, I used Jade Pumpkin Patch as my tote side panels. This color contrasted nicely from the Purple Spider Dots ruffle fabric! My fabric pairings and the leather straps made this tote so elevated, and I would gladly carry this bag all over our hometown, Ann Arbor, during the month of October!
