Spooky little projects with Ghoul Friends

I don’t usually reach for spooky prints, but I couldn’t resist dipping into the Ghoul Friends collection for a quick Halloween-themed project. It’s not my usual colour palette, which actually made it fun—like quilting dress-up.

I had some quarter yards from the collection and wanted to do something small, festive, and satisfying. So I made two quick things: a scrappy candy basket and some cheerful bunting. They come together as a cute little seasonal display that feels playful and just the right amount of weird (the good kind).

Candy Basket

The basket pattern is from SewCanShe’s free tutorial—a super quick sew with lots of room to mix and match prints. I used Vlieseline H640 for the batting to give it a bit more structure. It stands up nicely on its own and is just the right size for a respectable stash of Halloween sweets (or sewing clips, or dog treats, or whatever else needs containing in your home!).

Bunting, But Make It Spooky-Cute

Bunting is my go-to when I want something festive but not too time-consuming. It helps celebrate all the seasons at home! For this bunting, I played around with the flag shape—there are so many options! Triangles, rectangles, swallowtails… but I ended up going with the one that looks like a little house flipped upside down. (Is there a real name for that shape? If so, I don’t know it. Let’s call it the “haunted house hat.”)

It’s a great shape for showing off prints with a little more surface area—perfect for Ghoul Friends, since the characters are a bit bigger and you want to see their whole personalities. I made them double sided with and stitched them onto some black twill tape. Done and done.

I had a lot of fun making something speedy and seasonal. The mix of saturated colors and quirky characters in Ghoul Friends really pops, and it ended up being a great exercise in just playing with fabric without overthinking it.

And hey, now I have a festive corner in the house ready for trick-or-treaters’ candy (or just for me).
