Grasscloth Cottons- Plaidish Quilt

Hello fellow makers! It’s Luci here from Sea Garden Sewing, and writing to share my most recent quilt created with one of Riley Blake’s fabulous basics lines, Grasscloth Cottons!

This quilt was intended for a male recipient, and I was looking to expand on some of the basics lines that I’ve tried with Riley Blake. I was drawn to the texture and depth of Grasscloth Cottons and picked a simple palette of red, white, and black.

For my quilt, I followed the free Plaidish Scrap Quilt Tutorial by Kitchen Table Quilting, a pattern I’ve made before and had a blast creating. While the pattern is designed for scraps, it’s certainly friendly for yardage if you do a little bit of math for the fabric requirements. One bonus of using yardage for this pattern is that you can use strip piecing to speed up the construction of the quilt significantly.

After sewing the necessary strips and pressing, I cut them and combined with the other strips required in in each block.

There’s a lot of skinny strips in the quilt, so I used a lot of sewing clips to ensure that they lined up as closely as possible when sewing.

Here’s some pictures of the completed quilt!

You can really see the texture come through in this picture:

The Plaidish quilt tutorial is quite popular for good reason, and I could definitely see myself making another one down the line. As for the Grasscloth Cottons, I really enjoyed branching out and exploring this basic line. Maybe one of my future projects will have some more colors in the line!
