Precious Petites – Precious Dresdens
Hello quilty friends! Rachel here from Stitch With Rachel on YouTube and Instagram and today I am sharing a dresden quilt that I recently made with Precious Petites by Gerri Robinson of Planted Seed Designs.
This brand new fabric collection showcases soft florals in a beautiful pastel colour palette. I just knew that this would make a perfect quilt to brighten up the winter months, and to have ready for when spring starts to show. I wanted to create a quilt that would show off the prints but with a traditional pattern.
I took to Instagram for some inspiration for a dresden quilt as this has been on my bucket list for a while. Don’t you just love being inspired by all of the wonderful creations out there. I came across a wonderful quilt by Misty Quilts Alot where she had added snowballed corners to the edge of her dresden blocks, and it was love at first sight.
And so, the chain piecing began! I really enjoy when you can get into the rhythm of chain piecing, and a dresden quilt is a great one for that. I find that a thread cutter can speed up the process of cutting the units apart. I purchased mine from a quilt show and you can use old rotary blades inside the cutting device.
You can watch me create this quilt on my YouTube Channel and learn the technique to create your very own beautiful dresden quilt. The quilt pattern is great for using up fabric scraps as well as fussy cutting any motifs for the centre of the dresden.
Combining Hand & Machine Quilting
I am a true lover of hand quilting, I just love how much texture it adds to a quilt. For this quilt I decided to use a mixture of machine quilting and hand quilting to make the shape of the dresdens pop. I used DMC perle 8 cotton thread to quilt around the centre of the dresden and then a large circle around the edge of the dresden.
I think you’ll agree that the quilt has a lovely soft texture that just makes you want to relax on the sofa under a warm quilt. The pattern can be sized up for a bed quilt and sized down for a baby quilt. Making this a great versatile pattern.
I hope you enjoyed looking at my latest project and that you are also inspired to make a cosy quilt.
