Squaring Up Hourglass Blocks
I’m back quilty friends! Shereece Nicole of Sew Hooked on Treasures here to bring you another quilty tip.
Recently, I released a new quilt pattern – Apparition. I love designing quilts for beginners or those more experienced that need a “quick” project. The bonus of this pattern? There are a few leftover hourglass blocks perfect for making a coordinating pillow cover, wall hanging or any other small project you’d like.
For my beginner friends, I thought I’d do a quick tutorial on how to square up your hourglass blocks so they don’t sew together wonky. Now, grab your block, square ruler and rotary cutter to get started!
Ruler Rules
I recommend using a square ruler that has at least one 45° line. If my ruler is larger than the square up size, I mark it with painters tape to make it easier to keep track of the measurement.
Toe the Line
Line up your ruler with the 45° line along the diagonal seam (both 45° lines if there are two on your ruler). If you don’t have two lines, the upper left and lower right should line up on the opposite diagonal seam of your squared up measurement. Trim excess from the top and right sides.
Rinse and Repeat
Turn your block 180°. Repeat alignment process. This time the left and bottom sides of the block should align with the squared up measurement. Trim excess from the top and right sides.
Your block is now square!
