Cows Over The Moon Baby Quilt

With a slight “throw back” to the children’s rhyme from the 1800’s, Riley Blake Designs has debuted “Till the Cows Come Home,” a charming flannel fabric collection that is reminiscent of “the cow jumped over the moon”. This adorable collection, crafted by The RBD Designers, captures the essence of pastoral life with its delightful patterns and cozy textures.

The collection features a variety of designs, including curious cows, classic checkered patterns, and star motifs, all rendered in soft flannel. The color palette encompasses soothing shades such as ash, blue, taupe, and cloud, offering versatility for various projects.

“Till the Cows Come Home” is ideal for creating warm blankets, cozy apparel, and charming nursery décor. Its combination of whimsical farm-themed prints and soft flannel makes it a delightful choice for projects aimed at children and those young at heart. I decided to make a baby quilt for my first soon to arrive grandson!

At the time I made this quilt, we didn’t yet know the gender of the baby but I had a feeling it was a boy and it turns out, I was right! I’m so glad because this quilt is adorable! This is a pattern of my own making and I really enjoyed playing with the borders using half square triangles and the light & dark fabrics in this collection.

This collection also has some great options for fussy cutting! I used my handy Cute Cuts Rulers by Lori Holt for Riley Blake Designs to fussy cut the center squares for all nine of my blocks.

And to answer the question that I’m sure some of you have, yes, this flannel is SO soft! While I’ve never made an entire quilt using flannel before, I have used flannel for quilt backings in the past. The flannel I have previously used was a bit stiff and wasn’t very soft. But this flannel is like night and day to that past flannel! This flannel would be amazing as quilts or clothes!

For the back of this quilt I went with a somewhat pieced backing. I wanted just a tad bit of color so I added strips to three sides of the quilt leaving the bottom “as is”.

To really keep the theme of cows over the moon, I found the PERFECT pantograph from Urban Elementz called Over The Moon. How adorable is that pattern with the stars, moons, and cows!

For the final touch of binding, I decided on a scrappy binding using leftover fabric from the entire quilt, minus the center fussy cut fabric. Because the flannel is slightly thicker than cotton, I opted to attach the binding using the double fold method instead of the “regular” method of sewing down the raw edges on one side and pulling the finished edge around to the other side. I think it came out wonderfully!

I highly recommend you grab a fat quarter bundle of this cute collection and don’t forget the Cute Cuts Rulers to get perfect fussy cuts!
