Nostalgic Quilt Designs

The Unconditional Quilt Pattern features whimsical hearts in modern big block construction. I decided to make the 40″ x 60″ lap size version. I love this version because it also makes the perfect bed runner, as pictured on this Queen size bed.

*The Unconditional Quilt Pattern is full of detailed diagrams and includes a Bonus Pillow Project to reduce fabric waste. This beginner level pattern features 3 Sizes: Lap (40″ x 60″) / Twin (60″ x 80″) / Queen (80″ x 100″) with no curved piecing. Just the illusion of curves!

Let’s Make an Unconditional Bed Runner

The Unconditional Quilt is made up of (1) alternating block in 2 colour ways. For Block #1 I chose to feature the hero print from the collection. For Block #2 I used the Rose Silhouette to make up the center heart for the vintage vibe it brings to the design.

Block #1

  • Fabric A: Cream Main (Hearts) + Pink Roses (Corners)
  • Fabric B: Sage Ditsy
  • Fabric C: Cream Books

Block #2

  • Fabric A: Rose Silhouette (Hearts) + Cream Roses (Corners)
  • Fabric B: Blue Ditsy
  • Fabric C: Sky Books

Block Construction

Each Unconditional Block features (1) Heart Unit, (4) Flying Geese Units (using the 4 at a time method), and (4) HST Units (using the 2 at a time method).

The Book and Rose prints in this collection are perfect because they are non-directional, so you don’t have to worry about placement within the block.

Put it all together and you have a 20 1/2″ x 20 1/2″ block for a fast finish.

Bed Runner 40″ x 60″

With hearts running horizontally, this bed runner will make a cozy statement in any room. I would highly recommend using a super soft backing, like the sherpa shown below. I can imagine slipping my feet under the cover for an impromptu nap on a Sunday afternoon….

Binding: Pink Gingham

Backing: White Sherpa (Shannon Fabrics)

Quilting Pantograph: Be Mine (Urban Elementz)

The Lap Size Version Also Makes a Great Reading Quilt!

Create a Room Display

Quilts are more than just cozy layers—they’re works of art, and they deserve to be displayed that way. Create a beautiful focal point in any room by pairing your quilt with complementary textiles and meaningful objects to add depth, texture, and visual interest.

Wishing you happy quilt making—find joy in every stitch, and may the process be just as fulfilling as the finished quilt itself.
