Hey Pumpkin – Candy Grab Quilt

Hello, everyone! This is Luci from Sea Garden Sewing, and writing to share one of my quilt patterns using My Mind’s Eye’s Hey Pumpkin! My Mind’s Eye has created an example of my dream holiday collection- cute, smiley, and lots of pink (even if not traditionally called for).

For this project, I’m making the Fat Quarter version of my Candy Grab Quilt. I needed 16 fat quarters for the throw, so I picked my favorite 12 prints, duplicated two more (the webs in pink and orange) and used two blenders to even out my oranges. The white and black are for the background/secondary pattern.

The first step for the block is snowballing the corners. If you hate the waste associated with snowballing corners, you can also get an extra set of tiny half-square triangles if you sew a second line 1/2″ to the right of the initial line. Then, just use a rotary cutter to split down the middle, leaving a 1/4″ seam for both sides.

Half of the fun for me was picking the order of prints- I wanted it to look ‘random’, which is a lot harder to make than you’d think! I wanted there to be balanced pink and orange throughout, and didn’t want any of the same prints touching too close together. I realized I ended up with two identical prints in one of my blocks, but I think the prints are busy enough that the average person wouldn’t notice.

Here’s the finished quilt top:

I love how the Candy Grab pattern is so versatile and can showcase Fat Quarters. There’s also a yardage-friendly version if you’d prefer a quilt that’s a little less busy. You can get the Candy Grab pattern in my shop here if you’re interested!
