Make it Modern – Crosses on the Mount Quilt
Creating a quilt is more than just sewing pieces of fabric together. It’s a labor of love and a form of art. When it comes to creating a quilt for religious institutions, the process becomes even more meaningful. Let’s delve into the intricate details of the “Crosses on the Mount” quilt, specially crafted for the First United Methodist Church of Devine, Texas.
Hey there, it’s Kelly Renay here and I am beyond excited to share the breathtaking “Crosses on the Mount” quilt. In which I was honored to design and make for the First United Methodist Church of Devine. It is a true masterpiece of artistry and devotion.

What Inspired the Design?
The inspiration behind the “Crosses on the Mount” quilt stemmed from the religious significance of Jesus’ sacrifice. The quilt features three crosses set against a backdrop that captures the essence of a sunset-inspired spectrum of Confetti Cotton solid fabrics, transitioning from warm yellows to deep reds. This sunset-inspired color palette of yellows transitioning to deep reds symbolizes the celestial beauty of dusk, where the sun bids farewell to the day, casting a warm glow upon the earth. With the crosses on the mount paying homage to religious iconography, the three crosses of Calvary, which infuses the quilt with a spiritual aura.

Choosing the Color Palette…
In order to meticulously depict the crosses silhouettes against the backdrop of a setting sun, selecting the right hues of Confetti Cotton solids was crucial. Choosing a spectrum of Confetti Cotton solids ranging from the palest warm yellow to the deepest burgundy reds, with every color in between was imperative in capturing the essence of a radiant sunset. In total the “Crosses on the Mount” quilt used 43 colors from the Confetti Cotton solid fabrics line.

Bringing the Quilt to Life…
Creating the “Crosses on the Mount” quilt was a labor of love that required patience, precision, and a keen eye for color. To start I drew the design in Illustrator and began by colorizing from the center outward with the yellows to oranges, then from the outer edges inwards with the deep reds connecting with the oranges. Once the design had depth, movement and seamlessly blended from one shade to the next, I labelled the colors. Think ‘paint by number’ but in quilting form.

When it came time to make the quilt, it was painstakingly crucial and imperative to triple check color placement to create a seamless gradient. This meticulous placement of squares resulted in a stunning visual effect, with the crosses appearing to glow against the sunset-inspired background.

What Makes This Quilt Special?
Quilts have long been associated with warmth, comfort, and community. The “Crosses on the Mount” quilt embodies these qualities while also serving as a symbol of faith and devotion. Created as part of a beautification project for the First United Methodist Church of Devine’s fellowship hall, the “Crosses on the Mount” quilt not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the church but also beautifully represents faith, sacrifice, and the hope of redemption.
