Pine Grove – Open Prairie Quilt

Hi Makers! It is Sara from @SaraBQuilts with a quilt made for a special person in my life! I have been making quilts for almost 4 years now and my husband was never a recipient of one until now! My husband is a very active “quilt husband” and encourages me every step of the way. When I was showing him the latest Riley Blake Designs collections that were dropping, Pine Grove by the Riley Blake Designers stopped him in his tracks! He absolutely loved the collection, so I knew I had to make him his first quilt with it.

Pine Grove is a wonderful camp themed collection with animals, trees, camping gear, and pine cones! The colors include tan, green, black, and brown. These colors are very reminiscent of camouflage and since my husband has been in the military for over 15 years it is no surprise that he loved them!

I gave my husband multiple quilt patterns to pick from and he decided on the Open Prairie Quilt by Prairie Quilt Co (found HERE) and it was a perfect choice. The blocks are large so it comes together quickly and the pieces are big enough to show off the illustrations in the prints! I chose to make the throw size which is 3 blocks by 3 blocks with sashing and cornerstones between each block. I would really love to make a version of this quilt in my colors someday too!

I chose to use the Pine Grove Outlines in Putty as the sashing. While it is similar in color to Pinecones in Putty and Woodgrain in Tan, the dense illustrations set it off which made it a nice border fabric. I chose Plaid in Brown as the binding and Riley Blake Designs Coordinating Basic Shabby in Moss for the backing. This quilt has such a rustic feel and would be right at home in a forest cabin!

My husband’s favorite fabrics in the collection were the Outlines in Green, the Trees in Black, and Geometric in Green. I enjoyed alternating the darker greens and browns with the lighter tans and putty prints. The contrast made the Open Prairie blocks really stand out.

While these fabric prints and colors are not my usual picks, I really enjoyed making this quilt for my husband and am happily surprised at how much I love the way it turned out. With his military commitments, my husband is gone a lot of the year. I am so glad he will have this quilt with him to remind him of home.

I hope you find fun quilt patterns to use Riley Blake Design’s Pine Grove with like I did! It is such a charming collection for that camping lover in your family.
Happy making!
