Solar System Wall Hanging with Outer Space
Learn about the wonders of the solar system with the Solar System Wall Hanging made by Amanda Rowland with Outer Space fabrics!

Fabric Requirements
- 1 x Solar System Panel Black (CD15486-Black)
- 10 inches x WOF of Navy Main (CD15480-Navy)
- 10 inches x WOF for binding (I used a RBD black star print from my stash).
- 24 inches x WOF fabric for backing (e.g. CD15485 Red Space Suit Patent)
- 24 inches x 44 inches approximately of thin firm batting/wadding.
Process
- Cut 2 x 4.5″ WOF strips of Navy Main (i.e. all over print) and sew/join these to the top and bottom of the solar system panel.
- Press seams and baste the top, batting and backing together as you would for a quilt.
- I hand quilted around each planet in the black panel with 12 weight perle thread. Making sure all layers are flat, I then, machine quilted 2 straight lines on the outer edge of the black panel (this could be hand quilted too).
- Give the wall hanging light press from the back before basting (or big machine stitch) along the top and bottom edge of the wall hanging (this is just a holding stitch which will be covered by the binding), about one eighth of inch from the edge.
- At this point, decide how and what you need to do for hanging your wall hanging. There are a variety of options, for example attach a dowel rod sleeve or loops to the back (just down from the top edge, about 2″) making sure you use a narrow dowel. You can also attach 2 x metal triangles (used in picture framing) or split rings to the back, that can then hang on picture hooks on the wall. It is up to you. I did both because you need the dowel to keep the wall hanging ridged and then the rings for the picture hooks.
- Lastly, trim and square off your raw edge wall hanging and then prepare and attach binding as you would for a quilt. Note: you can use single layer binding for this project.
