Winged Medley – Maggie Poppins Tote

Hi, Tamara here from Remi Vail Studio! I’m so happy to share the quilted tote bag I made using the Winged Medley fabric collection designed by Katherine Lenius for Riley Blake Designs. With its soft florals, delicate birds, and vintage field guide charm, this fabric line immediately reminded me of spring mornings, garden walks, and quiet moments surrounded by nature.
The collection felt like the perfect match for my Maggie Poppins Tote pattern – a bag I designed to be both beautiful and incredibly useful. With sixteen pockets, sturdy handles, and room for all the essentials, it’s my favorite kind of make: practical, pretty, full of story, and of course, quilted!

Why I Love the Winged Medley Collection
From the moment I opened this fabric bundle, I was drawn to the earthy color palette with pops of teal and orange and the tiny, detailed illustrations. Each print tells a little story; together, they felt like the pages from a vintage nature journal.
I used at least one colorway from each of the different prints, along with a few RBD Basics – raisin gingham, pumpkin cross stitch, and teal grasscloth. I adore how they came together!

The Maggie Poppins Tote + Patchwork Pockets Patterns
The Maggie Poppins Tote is my go-to bag pattern when I want something with a ton of handmade charm, but it also feels incredibly practical. For this version, I also used the Patchwork Pockets Extension Pattern, which provides instructions for creating the scrappy patchwork you see on the 8 exterior and 8 interior pockets. The piecing is a perfect way to feature many small and medium-scale prints, like those in Winged Medley.

Quilting + Thread Details
To add texture and depth, I quilted and topstitched all pieces using Aurifil 28-weight thread in Peony (#2440). The heavier-weight thread gave the stitching just enough visual impact without competing with the prints. For piecing, I used Aurifil 50-weight in Muslin (#2311) – a neutral that blended perfectly with the lighter fabrics.
The finished bag has a lovely tactile quality and holds its shape beautifully, thanks to a combination of cotton batting, SF101 interfacing, and fusible foam.

Adding the Finishing Touches
One of my favorite things about sewing bags are the little details. This pattern includes extra topstitching on the handles, pockets, base, and binding for a special touch. I also fussy cut a few birds and flowers to give them center stage on the pockets.
