Sunflower Autumn quilt with Sparkler Basics
Do you hold onto patterns waiting for the perfect fabrics to come along? For over the past year I have saved the pattern Sunflower Autumn by Wendy Shepard. I saw it in the Quilters World Autumn 2023 issue and immediately knew I wanted to make it but at the time I didn’t have the right collection of fabric to bring my version of it to life. Then I came across the beautiful and vibrant Sparkler line for RBD Basics Collection. This set of 30 fabrics come in an assortment of colors and have a hint of gold metallic speckled throughout. From a distance the fabrics read like a solid but when you get closer you’ll see that the fabric is anything but basic.
For my interpretation of this quilt, I wanted a variety pinks, reds, oranges and yellow- a quilt that had energetic and happy vibes. The name of the pattern is Sunflower Autumn and the original quilt looks amazing in warm, cozy fall colors but for my quilt I took inspiration from the vivid late summer sunsets I see in the Bay Area.
In addition to colorful flowers, I think the green stems and border, made from the Clover Sparkle color, and the scrappy binding helps make this quilt pop! This quilt will definitely brighten any room I use it.
For the quilting, I sent my quilt to Sundance Quilting and selected the Happy Flowers pattern. To complement the metallic gold in the fabrics, the quilting was done in a yellow-mustard thread.
For the quilt backing, this Bee Vintage Sylvia Daisy fabric was a great match. The Bee Vintage collection has lots of great options and I think this vintage-y print blends in well with this modern quilt design.
With every quilt I make, I enjoy playing with different colors and techniques. This was an especially fun quilt to practice choosing a color palette.
What are your favorite colors from the Sparker collection?
Happy sewing!
