Bright and Bold Bunting with Riley Blake’s Sparkler Fabric
Hi, friends! It’s Sara from Rose Hill Quilts, and today I’m sharing a project that holds a special place in my heart: oversized bunting! Using the vibrant Sparkler fabric collection by Melissa Mortenson, I created colorful bunting that served as decoration for my wedding earlier this year. It added the perfect festive touch to our celebration, and I’m excited to reuse it for parties and picnics in the future!
This project is simple, fun, and an excellent way to showcase these Riley Blake Designs Basics in bold, oversized shapes. Let me take you through the steps and share a few tips along the way!
Why Oversized Bunting?
Oversized bunting makes a big impact with minimal effort. The larger flags beautifully highlight the stunning colors and patterns of the Sparkler fabric collection, creating a cheerful and eye-catching display. Plus, it’s versatile—perfect for special occasions, home decor, or outdoor gatherings.
How I Made My Oversized Bunting
- Choosing the Fabrics:The Sparkler collection offers a stunning range of colours, so I selected a mix of hues to create a bright, celebratory look.
- Making the Template: To design the flags, I created a chevron-shaped template from sturdy cardboard. The oversized chevron design added a modern twist, and the template made it easy to replicate consistent shapes for each flag.
- Cutting and Sewing the Flags: I traced the template onto the fabric, cutting two pieces for each flag. To ensure durability, I sewed the two layers together, turned them right-side out, and pressed them flat for crisp edges.
- Assembling with Bias Binding:
I used bias binding to join the flags, pinning them into place before sewing along the edge. The binding not only held the flags securely but also added a neat finish to the bunting.
This project is such a fun way to add personality and charm to any event. I’d love to see how you make it your own! If you give it a try, don’t forget to tag Riley Blake Designs and me, @RoseHillQuilts, so we can celebrate your creativity together. Happy stitching!
