Using Panels to Spark Creativity
Panels from fabric lines can be amazing to work with, helping you create beautiful pieces from wall hangings, to table runners, or ottoman throws to add a decorative touch to any room with ease. I had the opportunity to used a panel from one of Riley Blake Designs’ newest collection, Perennial by Jill Finley, to make a wall hanging and ottoman throw for my living room.
Using the panel as project center piece, it came together beautifully. I started by framing the panel square with coordinating fabrics from the Perennial collection. Then, I used Golden Quilter’s Tracing Paper to plan out my quilting design. I chose a “lettuce” border pattern that I drew out around the main square inside border. I wanted the panel to “pop.” Then I added some free-motion quilting to the other borders for texture.
I did all the quilting on my best-girl HQ Sweet Sixteen stationary long-arm machine. One of the best things about using Golden Quilter Tracing Paper is that you can lay the paper on your quilt sandwich, draw-out your design, and stitch through the paper. When finished quilting, the paper tears away cleanly without disturbing your stitches – perfect tool for both beginners and pros alike.
I love how my panel project turned out. For your next project or if you’re looking for inspiration, pick a panel from one of your favorite Riley Blake Designs collection and see how it sparks your creativity. Avid quilter approved!
