Sawtooth Stars Quilt with Garden Dreams
Hello, makers! It’s Sara from Rose Hill Quilts. When I first got my hands on the Garden Dreams collection, I immediately changed my plans. The prints are so stunning, I didn’t want to cut them into tiny pieces—I wanted them to really shine.
To do that, I turned to my favourite quilt block: the sawtooth star. I think every quilter has a favourite between half-square triangles and flying geese, and for me, it’s definitely the geese! The sawtooth star was an obvious choice for this collection since the centre of the block beautifully showcases the fabric designs.
For some quick math, I used the Offset Sawtooth Stars free pattern by Then Came June. I made this quilt with 13 fat quarters from the Garden Dreams collection and 2 yards of background fabric. For the background, I chose Leaf Toss in Sage, which blended nicely. The backing is Spruce Texture, one of the coordinating basics from the collection. You can see all the prints and coordinating fabrics in the storyboard.
This was my first time using the Rosemary Pantograph by Dastardly Quilt Studio in Glasgow. It’s a dense pantograph that gave the quilt fantastic texture. For the wadding, I went with a bamboo-cotton mix from Vlieseline. It has a higher loft than other bamboo waddings, which added great definition to the pantograph design.
As always, I spent quite a bit of time choosing the thread color, but I finally settled on Glide Seagull. It blended beautifully with both the background and the backing fabric.
I can’t wait to see what you create with this collection!
