Panel Quilt with Get Your Cray-on with Crayola
I’ve always loved Riley Blake Designs panels, and this collection features a really fantastic one! Here’s what you’ll need to make this crib-sized quilt:
- One panel from the collection
- Nine quarter yards from the collection—there are so many great options! You can see them all on the storyboard.
- A fat quarter of the main print in mint
- 1/2 yard of binding fabric—I used a print from the collection, but you can also check out the new stripe collection from Riley Blake Designs.
- 3 1/4 yards of backing fabric of your choice
Piecing the Piano Keys
Each piano key block finishes at 3 x 6 inches, but don’t worry—you don’t need to cut each piece individually. You can use strip piecing to make the process easier. Here’s how:
- Cut 9 strips from each of your quarter yards, each measuring 3.5 inches by the full width of the fabric.
- To keep things manageable, I pieced the strips in two groups:
- First, I sewed together 4 strips.
- Then, I pieced the remaining 5 strips together.
- Make sure to press your strips really well before cutting them into 6.5-inch segments.
With these segments, you can now piece together the quilt’s borders:
- Top border: You’ll need 12 piano key segments. The border will measure 6.5 x 36.5 inches (unfinished).
- Side borders: You’ll need 14 piano key segments for each side, and they will measure 6.5 x 42.5 inches (unfinished).
- Corner squares: Cut four 6.5-inch squares from the main mint print for each corner.
Quilting & Finishing
To finish, I quilted it with a simple pantograph and used Yellow Whisper Glide thread. The soft yellow color subtly complements the panel without drawing attention away from the illustrations.
Happy sewing!
