General Store Quilt with A Walk on the Prairie
The Little House on the Prairie was always a favorite show of mine growing up. Just thinking about it conjures the memory of being home sick from school, curled up with a bowl of soup, watching the rerun drama unfold between Laura and Nellie (if you know, you know!). Naturally, I was ecstatic to find that Melissa Gilbert of Modern Prairie designed a new fabric collection for Riley Blake called A Walk on the Prairie. This collection is everything I hoped it would be: comforting, beautiful, and nostalgic.
To feature this collection, I wanted to make a quilt that used a wide variety of prints from the collection. I used a pattern called the General Store Quilt from my Cabin Series quilt patterns. It’s a throw size scrappy Irish Chain pattern that has been adapted to be used with precut fabrics and come together with efficient strip piecing.
Tips For Making an Extra Cozy Quilt
When striving to make an extra cozy quilt for the fall and winter months, I like to choose a scrappy pattern with an old-fashioned patchwork feel, like this one. Beyond the scrappy look, I find that wool batting gives the quilt that extra “squish” that we all love and really makes the quilting pop. Finally, I like to finish a cozy quilt off with a scrappy binding finished by hand with chunky hand stitching. I find that Aurifil 12 wt. thread gives good texture while still being easy to stitch through several layers.
For the background fabric, I used Floral in Deep River. For the patchwork, I used several different fat quarters from the collection. The binding is scrappy and consists of leftover cuts from the fat quarters used in the quilt top. The backing is Riley Blake basic POParazzi White-on-White.
I’m excited to see what you choose to make with this gorgeous new collection! If you share your projects on social media, don’t forget to use the tags #RileyBlakeDesigns and #ILoveRileyBlake.
See you next time!
