Twilight & Sophisticated Cheddar

Most people enjoy a good cheddar. Throw in a light fruity wine and you’ve got yourself a party! But this isn’t that kind of cheddar. I’m talking about the beautiful new collection that is Cheddar at Twilight, by Riley Blake Designs Designers.

This collection screams sophistication and opulence. The detailed florals in this palette of cream, cheddar, gold, midnight & navy were begging me to make something that you would only find in a mansion at the top of a hill with a long winding drive.

I used the FREE Patchwork Baby Quilt pattern by Liz Johnson from Sew 4 Home. I did make some adjustments so my quilt would finish at about 61″x68″ instead of her size of 40″x40″. And I left out the monogram. This pattern is made up of larger blocks which allows the patterns & details of each print to stand out. But to really bring out the fanciness of this collection, the quilting needed to be perfect!

I opted to do a swirly design in each of the smaller blocks, alternating the direction the design faced in each row. And for the larger blocks I alternated between crosshatching and straight line quilting in every other row. For each block I stitched in the ditch all the way around but the part that really makes the blocks pop is the half inch frame I did around every block. And to really make sure the quilting stood out, I did double batting for that extra loft. For the thread, I used Superior Threads Omni #3022 Silver. I used this on the top and in my bobbin. The silver color just blends so nicely with everything!

For the sashing, I went with Confetti Cottons Riley White from Riley Blake Designs so there would be a noticeable difference between the sashing and the collection fabrics. If I had gone with a cream, I think the distinction between the sashing and the blocks might have been lost. For the backing, I selected the Pearl Confetti Cotton from Riley Blake Designs which is more of a cream color. Since I had some extra fabric left over I did a pieced backing!

The Cheddar at Twilight collection has 21 prints but I only used 10 for this quilt. I always recommend people get the fat quarter bundle of any collection because you get all the fabrics! If you decide to go with the fat quarter bundle of this collection, you can make TWO quilts measuring the same size as mine and still have some fabric left over! You will need additional yardage for the sashing, backing and binding fabric. For my binding, I went with Twilight Confetti Cotton from Riley Blake Designs.

This collection is absolutely gorgeous and I highly recommend you make something beautiful using it!

This quilt is absolutely stunning! Please share the adjusted pattern. I like having a large lap quilt more than a little baby quilt.

Thank you sew much! The original pattern finished at 40″x40″ but I wanted it bigger so I added a third section, and some extra length, to get mine to finish at 61″x68″. To get that finished size, you’ll want to cut 30 squares measuring 5.5″x5.5″, 30 squares measuring 5.5″x12.5″, and 50 squares measuring 2.5″x5.5″. You’ll also need 9 strips measuring 61.5″x2.5″ for your sashing strips between the rows. Lay out your rows as follows: large block, small sashing, small block, small sashing, large block, small sashing, small block, small sashing, large block, small sashing, small block. That’s your first row. Then add a long sashing strip under the first row. Then your second row will alternate starting with a small block instead of a large one. Do this for 10 rows. Have fun!
