Black & White Dreamscape

“Black and white creates a strange dreamscape that color never can.” – Jack Antonoff. When working with color, it’s easy to create “art”. But to create art from only black and white takes a special eye and even perhaps, perspective.

When I first saw the Achromatic Dance batik fabric collection, I loved it! I knew I had to make something with it. I’ve only made one black and white quilt before and honestly, it was boring. I had no imagination with it so this was my chance to really make art from black and white.

I knew the perfect pattern for this quilt was Triangle Hexies by Quilty Love. The pattern uses larger blocks to make up the main body of the hexie which leaves enough fabric to see the beautiful patterns in each print. It also frames each hexie with an accent fabric which 1) allows the hexies to stand and shine individually and also 2) makes it look like the hexies are floating!

The fabric prints range from swirly vines with leaves to bubbles to ocean like seaweed. And even though the colors in the collection are essentially just black and white, there is more than enough variance that each fabric is distinguishable from one another.

For this pattern, I used 13 prints from the collection which comes with a whopping 21 prints! Because it’s so hard to select just a few prints for the pattern, I recommend you grab the Achromatic Dance fat quarter bundle so you can really play with them to design the perfect hexies. You will need to add yardage for the accent and background fabric regardless of what size quilt you make.

While this pattern is fat quarter friendly, I used half yard cuts to make mine. I simply cut the half yards, in half which is just two fat quarters. Since I only used one fat quarter from each print for this quilt, I still have another fat quarter of all my prints to make another Achromatic Dance quilt!

The pattern instructs you to press all the seams open. Because I thought the backside was just as beautiful and artistic, I wanted to include a pic of the pressed seams. Look at how beautiful they look!

And because I love including video tutorials, I made one for this quilt! You can check it out below. Enjoy!
