Hot Wheels Made to Race – Bag Duo
Growing up, my brother and his friends played for hours upon hours with their Hot Wheels cars. My brother had an elaborate setup of Hot Wheels tracks laid out all across his bedroom; for them to race and have adventures. On a rare occasion they would allow me to join in on the fun. And, of course, I had my favorite Hot Wheels car. It was an awesome pink car that color shifted to purple when put into water. Those sure are some fun childhood memories!
So, when I had the chance to make something with the Hot Wheels Made to Race collection, I was excited to reminisce. Hey there, it’s Kelly Renay here and I’m honored to share a couple of fun playful Hot Wheels themed bags with you today.
In order to show off the Hot Wheels Made to Race fabrics, I selected a few prints for the Athena Crossbody and The Violet Backpack patterns by Knot and Thread Design.
For both bags, I used hardware by Craft Me More, zipper tape and pulls from Modern Fabrics Shoppe, and webbing ribbon by Renaissance Ribbons.
Now that you know the sources for the components of the bags, let’s take a look at both bags…
Athena Crossbody
The Athena Crossbody is the perfect sized bag for packing your essentials when you’re going to be on your feet for a while. Maybe at a car show or, more likely, a quilt show? Wink, wink! Kaitlyn of Knot and Thread Design added a cool detail to the Athena Crossbody with a third strap attachment on the bottom side of the bag. This third hook attachment allows for the crossbody to also be worn on your back, as opposed to your side like most standard crossbody bags.
For the Athena Crossbody I selected the Hot Wheels fabric, Logo Toss in White, as the main pieces for the body of the bag. To contrast the main print I used the Hot Wheels, Tone-on-Tone Navy fabric for the binding elements on the outside portions for the Athena Crossbody. Then, I wanted to highlight the gusset of the bag with the iconic black and white checkered print, like a racing flag, so I used the Hot Wheels, Checker in Black. Lastly, for the interior, I wanted to include a fun playful pop of color, a little nod to the Hot Wheels branding color yellow, so I used the Confetti Cotton in Lemon Zest.
The Violet Backpack
Whether it’s being used by a child or a kid at heart The Violet Backpack is a great grab and go bag. The backpack is an adorable size, about the same size as a US Letter sheet of paper. So, not big enough for a school backpack. But is large enough to hold some goodies and a bottle of water.
For the main body of The Violet Backpack I wanted to showcase the cars, the main thing when I think of Hot Wheels. So I selected the Hot Wheels fabric, Car Race in Black. Just like the Athena Crossbody, I used the Hot Wheels, Checker in Black, on the bags zipper gussets. On the bottom gusset of the backpack, I did a tight diagonal grid quilting on the POParazzi in Black fabric. As an accent fabric, I selected the Hot Wheels, Tone-on-Tone Orange for a binding and handle to add a little contrast with a pop of color. Lastly, for the interior I selected the Hot Wheels, Track in White, for a bit of childhood nostalgia within the bag. Plus, I included one of my favorite Riley Blake Designs basics for the gusset linings and interior pockets in the POParazzi on Cream Black fabric.
These fun Hot Wheels themed bags were quickly claimed by my Dad. He is already planning his first walk at the park using The Violet Backpack.
