Autumn Afternoon and a Maple Leaf Quilt Tutorial

Hey there! It’s Lesley from Piece and Quilted Studio, and I’m back to show you what I’ve made with the beautiful new collection by Heather Peterson, called Autumn Afternoon! This fabric line has all the colors of fall and I wanted to showcase the prints so you could see how wonderful they are. I think these large maple leaf blocks do just that! See below for a quick tutorial on how to get a big and a small maple leaf block out of a fat quarter!

Fabrics used in this quilt top are:

  • Hexi dots in cream for the background
  • Crosshatch yellow
  • Pumpkins in orange
  • Pumpkins in teal
  • Daisies in saffron
  • Daisies in wine
  • Hexi dots in brown
  • Fall toss in teal
  • Main floral in cream

To make a quick maple leaf block you will need the following cuts of fabric. I was able to get enough fabric to make a small and a large maple leaf block with each fat quarter plus some background fabric. See the fat quarter cutting chart and fabric cuts needed below! (Please keep in mind that your fat quarter needs to be at least 18″x 21″ to make this happen and there is NO wiggle room!)

You will need 4 HST for each maple leaf block. Using the 5 1/2″ (small) and 10 1/4″ (large) squares of fabric and background, put them right sides together and pin. Sew with a 1/4″ inch seam allowance around the edge of the fabric on all sides. Cut an X diagonally through the sewn squares. Press each HST and trim to 3 1/2″ (small) and 6 1/2″ (large).

The stem block is quite easy to make! Cut a background square 3 1/2″ (small) and 6 1/2″ (large) in half diagonally. Fold each triangle in half to make a small crease along the long edge. Fold the 1 1/2″x 5″ (small) and 2 1/2″ x 10″ (large) strip in half to crease. Place the strip along the long edge of the triangle, right sides together, and match up your folded creases. Pin and sew using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Do this for both triangles. Press and trim to 3 1/2″ (small) and 6 1/2″ (large). Now you are ready to assemble!!

Make as many or as little blocks as you want and assemble your quilt top as you wish! Four of the small maple leaf blocks sewn together in a square equals the same size as a large maple leaf block (I’ve used this as my center block in my quilt). I hope you try it, and if you do, please tag me in your makes on instagram! #pieceandquiltedpatterns

Happy Sewing!
