A Note From Justine!

Hi! I’m Justine and I am the owner of Modern Quilting in Phoenix, AZ! I have been a quilter for virtually my whole life, and it was always a dream of mine to open my own shop. As luck would have it, a few years ago the owner of the local quilt shop (LQS) that I shopped in was getting ready to retire. Because I already loved the store, I decided to take the plunge and buy the shop from her.  Back in 2006, when I was getting ready to become a mom, I discovered that the world of quilting had changed quite a bit from what it had been when I started making quilts in the mid-90’s. Fabrics were fresher, patterns were less traditional, and the internet was bringing quilters together like never before!

The internet has had a profound effect on the way quilters and crafters create and share their passions. Before, you had to take part in a guild or bee in order to share projects, gain inspiration and have community with others who shared your interests. Today, all we have to do is tap our phones a couple times and we can enter the land of social media, where there’s always something interesting to absorb.  While I think it’s great that folks can find community in spaces like Instagram or Facebook, I think we are missing out on a lot that happens when people go out to a guild, a sewing circle, or their local quilt shop.

Firstly, and most obviously, you get to see the fabric! Seeing, touching, and matching fabrics will always be better as an in-person activity. Cameras, screens, lighting…all these things can change the way a fabric looks on a computer, and there’s no way to judge the quality of a fabric from a picture. I’m sure nearly everyone who’s shopped online for anything, not just fabric, has experienced that moment when they rip open the package they’ve been waiting (im)patiently for and the product inside…isn’t that great. The color is off, it seemed bigger online, it’s made of cheap materials…whatever it may be that just leaves you disappointed. Shopping in person alleviates that risk.

One of the things I always loved about visiting my LQS is the friendliness and knowledgeability of the staff. After all, the majority of the people who work in a quilt shop are quilters themselves, and are almost always ready and willing to help you pick fabric, troubleshoot a problem, or just ooh and ahh over your latest creation!

Classes and events can also be tons of fun when you attend in person! Attending a workshop, class or activity at your LQS can introduce you to new people, new techniques, or just provide some company while you sew. Quilting and sewing bees of yesteryear still exist, albeit in a different light, and you can find them in your LQS!  Of course, supporting your LQS also helps your community. Money spent in local businesses tends to stay in the community, and local businesses are more likely to support causes that are in their and your own neighborhoods. Our shop supports several local and national charities, including Honor Flight, Ryan’s Case for Smiles, and AZ Blankets for Kids. From everyone here at Modern Quilting, we thank you for your continued support and can’t wait to see your next project! – Justine
