Top Knot Pattern with Chloe
I love choosing a fabric collection that goes with the pattern theme! You’ve probably spotted other fabric and pattern matches in my previous blog posts, like the bear paws for Elmer and Eloise, or the sombrero bear for Smokey’s licensed Only You collection. In this case, the adorable prints in the Chloe collection felt nicely aligned with Top Knot, the new pattern released by Lindsey at Pen and Paper Patterns.
Choosing a quilt background colour
The first thing I did when pattern-testing this quilt was to decide which background fabric to use. This is an important step because it influences which prints from the collection can be used in the piecing. In order to find the right background colour, I normally use the collection storyboards for inspiration. I don’t love doing a white background for a quilt – instead, the bolder the colour, the better!
I had originally thought about using Sweet Mint Blossom, but I ended up choosing Periwinkle Confetti Cottons. However, I think that any of them would have worked! When I put up a poll on social media everyone wanted to see it made on the Jade Bee Cross Stitch. Which one would you like to use as a background for your Chloe quilt?
Here’s the final quilt! The pattern comes in two different versions, this one with the same size bows, and a different one with three different sizes of bows. You can find the pattern on the Pen and Paper Patterns website.
Quilting the Top Knot Pattern
I used the Vlieseline Cotton Mix 80-20 batting, which has a really nice loft and gave the quilted bows strong definition. The pantograph is called Melissa’s bows, and if you want a quilt with bows on bows, you can find it on Urban Elementz!
I finished it with some labels and a contrast pink binding.
