Lakehouse Plaid Quilt with the Feels Like Home Collection
Hi friends, it’s Amy from Ritual Quilt Company. Have you seen Amber Johnson’s new collection, Feels Like Home? It’s as beautiful and comforting as it sounds. As soon as I saw the collection, my heart jumped a little! I knew a cozy quilt is just what these prints called for. While the collection is full of soothing blues, greens, and yellows, I ultimately narrowed my fabric choice down to a few warm tones: Blush Sagebrush, Cream Scrub Oak, and Cabin Scrub Oak.
This quilt pattern is called Lakehouse Plaid and is available as a PDF pattern at ritualquiltcompany.com. Being a print lover, my favorite thing about the Feels Like Home collection is how well each print blends with the others. I love playing with prints and using them in quilts where one might typically use solids. The scrub oak prints work really well as low volumes, which adds some fun interest when used as background fabrics.
If you typically use solid fabrics in your quilts and feel hesitant about branching out, here are a few tips to try when using prints in your quilt:
- Choose non-directional prints for your first few quilts. This way, you won’t have to stress about the orientation of each fabric piece and whether the finished quilt will appear chaotic.
- Choose low-volume prints for the background fabric or fabric with the highest yardage requirement. Low volume prints read as solids and will ground the quilt while adding interest.
- Save bold or large-scale prints for the fabric with the lowest amount of yardage required OR for the quilt block pieces that would work well for fussy cutting/ featuring the print.
- Consider making a digital mockup of the quilt using the prints you like. This will help you visualize the effects of each print on your overall quilt design.
I can’t wait to see what you make with the Feels Like Home collection! Whether you love cool or warm tones, this collection has gorgeous options available to you. Happy sewing!
