A New Mini Flag Quilt and Star Garland with Sweet Freedom
Hi everyone! Have you seen Beverly McCullough’s new fabric line titled “Sweet Freedom“? This beautiful fabric line reminds me July 4th, summer and picnic gatherings.
When I first saw these fabrics, I was inspired to make a flag quilt and I wanted something small that could be display at home or be hung at the park for a festive Independence Day BBQ. This free pattern by Jenifer Gaston titled “Patriotic Mini Quilt” was perfect! I especially liked how the variety of the red, white and blue prints in the collection gave the mini quilt a scrappy yet cohesive look. I also added a couple of RBD basics (seasonal basic stars red, dainty daisy on cloud barn red, and dainty daisy denim) which paired beautifully!
To accompany my mini quilt, I made a garland of stars inspired by this Farmhouse Fabric Star Garland tutorial. I made a couple adjustments to fit my style. The main changes I made include not filling the stars with poly-fil and instead I sewed batting to the fabric to give the stars some added weight. I also chose not to have raw edges, so I sewed the fabrics right sides together and then turned them right side out and hand stitched the opening closed. While turning the stars inside out, using a turning tool (such as this one) helped make for a really nice, polished finish.
What are you inspired to make with this sweet fabric line? I’d love to see your projects! You can reach me @cottonconfectionery on Instagram.
